I am the vegetable entomology specialist at Virginia Tech. I have a 75% Research: 25% Extension appointment in the Department of Entomology. I also have a close affiliation with the Virginia Tech Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Painter, VA. I investigate the biology and control of arthropod pests and use this knowledge to develop and deliver useful pest management information to agricultural clientele and the scientific community. The overall goal of my program is to develop, evaluate, and help implement sound integrated pest management practices on vegetable crops, which can enhance the profitability and sustainability of vegetable production in Virginia, as well as improve food and environmental quality by minimizing the use of toxic pesticides.
Currently I have ongoing research projects in the following areas: 1) brown marmorated stink bug biology, ecology, and pest management strategies in vegetable crops (John Aigner M.S. student; Holly Wantuch); 2) Colorado potato beetle insecticide resistance management (Adam Wimer Ph.D. graduate); 3) effect of buckwheat companion plantings on biological control of pests in collards (Chris Philips Ph.D. student); 4) ecology and IPM of Mexican bean beetle on snapbeans; 5) evaluating novel pest management strategies for pumpkin production; wireworm control in potatoes; 6) organic control of squash bug (Helene Doughty M.S. student); and 7) evaluation of novel insecticides for control of lepidopteran pests, stink bugs, thrips, aphids, beetles, maggots, and spider mites on potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, eggplant, snap bean, cole crops, and cucurbits.
