Teaching

ENT. 6004. Advanced Topics in Entomology: Writing and Professional Development in the Entomological Sciences. Credits: 1.

Guest lectures in several other entomology classes including:

ENT 4254 Insect Pest Management (Undergraduate; every spring)

ENT 5214 Arthropod Pest Management (Graduate; fall of even years)

Insect Pest Management; Pesticide Usage; Arthropod Pest Management; Biological Control of Insects and Weeds; and other classes taught in other departments.

I have a 75% Research: 25% Extension appointment focused on vegetable and turf entomology. The overall goal of my program is to develop, evaluate, and help implement sound integrated pest management practices that can enhance the profitability and sustainability of crop production in Virginia, as well as improve food and environmental quality by minimizing the use of toxic pesticides.  My research focuses on investigating the biology, ecology, and control of arthropod pests and use this knowledge to develop and deliver useful pest management information to agricultural clientele and the scientific community.

Current Projects 2017:

1) Brown marmorated stink bug biology, ecology, and pest management

2) Area-wide biointensive suppression of brown marmorated stink bug

3) Mexican bean beetle ecology and IPM

4) Harlequin bug chemical ecology and IPM strategies

5) Sustainable pest management practices for cucurbit crops

6) Sweet corn integrated pest management

7) Wireworm control in potatoes, wheat, and corn

9) Insect pest management for hemp production

10) Annual bluegrass weevil in Virginia turfgrass

11) Evaluation of novel insecticides for control of lepidopteran pests, stink bugs, thrips, aphids, beetles, maggots, and spider mites on potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, eggplant, snap bean, cole crops, and cucurbits.

I maintain an active extension program in vegetable and turf IPM.  I participate in numerous winter educational meetings, workshops, field days, and vegetable grower conferences in Virginia and surrounding states each year.  My lab produces several extension publications, e-mail updates and web sites to distribute extension information.
