RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Areas of expertise

Arboviral epidemiology, mosquito surveillance, sero-surveillance, molecular biology, molecular genetics, arbovirology, phylogenetic analyses, ABSL 2&3 animal work.

Research Interests

The goal of the Auguste lab is to study the ecology, evolution, transmission dynamics, pathogenesis and develop interventions arthropod-borne viruses. My research has focused on a central theme, which is to understand the ecological and evolutionary factors that influence the emergence of arboviruses, and develop appropriate intervention strategies for important arboviral agents.

Arbovirus surveillance

Characterization of novel viruses from mosquitoes

Elucidating the mechanism by which insect specific flaviviruses are host-restricted

Phylogenetic studies to understand the evolution and spread of viruses

Elucidating the mechanisms by which insect specific viruses preclude super-infection of pathogenic flaviviruses in vivo

Developing antivirals and vaccines for re-emerging arboviruses

“Mechanisms by which insect-specific flaviviruses are host restricted and preclude super-infection with pathogenic flaviviruses”

The goal of this project is to understand the mechanisms underlying the host restriction of insect-specific flaviviruses and the mechanisms by which they preclude super-infection in vivo in mice and mosquitoes.

“Complete genome sequencing of a collection of the Eastern equine encephalitis viruses”

Purpose: To sequence 100 Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) strains representing the entire spatial and temporal distribution of EEEV in the New World. Sequences will be used to characterize EEEV genetic diversity and describe EEEV evolutionary dynamics and phylogeographic history.

Role: Postdoc Investigator
