I have a 75% Research: 25% Extension appointment focused on vegetable and turf entomology. The overall goal of my program is to develop, evaluate, and help implement sound integrated pest management practices that can enhance the profitability and sustainability of crop production in Virginia, as well as improve food and environmental quality by minimizing the use of toxic pesticides.  My research focuses on investigating the biology, ecology, and control of arthropod pests and use this knowledge to develop and deliver useful pest management information to agricultural clientele and the scientific community.

Current Projects 2020:

1)  Brown marmorated stink bug biology, ecology, and pest management especially in vegetable crops

2)  Sustainable pest management practices for cucurbit crops –Sean Boyle PhD research

3)  Sweet corn integrated pest management including corn earworm insecticide resistance

4)  Wireworm IPM in potatoes including pheromone traps, entomopathogenic fungi-based control; novel insecticide evaluation – Mika Pagani graduate research

5)  Insect pest management for hemp production – Kadie Britt PhD research

6)  Annual bluegrass weevil ecology in Virginia turfgrass – Emeline Daly graduate research

7)  Spotted lanternfly ecology and host plants in Virginia – Andy Dechaine graduate research

8)  Ecology of Chauliognathus spp. soldier beetles – Katlyn Catron PhD research

9)  Developing sound IPM for edamame production – Kemper Sutton PhD research

10)  Ecology of Alydid (broad-headed) bugs in edible soybean systems

11)  Transgenic Bt corn, neonicotinoids and soil insect management in Virginia corn – Kyle Bekelja PhD research – co-advised with Dr. Sally Taylor

12)  Evaluation of novel insecticides and resistance management strategies for control of lepidopteran pests, stink bugs, thrips, aphids, beetles, weevils, maggots, leafhoppers, and mites on potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, eggplant, snap bean, cole crops, cucurbits, edamame, CBD oil hemp, grain hemp, and corn.

I maintain an active extension program in vegetable and turf IPM.  I participate in numerous winter educational meetings, workshops, field days, and vegetable grower conferences in Virginia and surrounding states each year.  My lab produces several extension publications, e-mail updates and web sites to distribute extension information.
